Myanmar Refugee Kids Tuition Project @ Manna House Centre

Prior to being under the Manna House umbrella, MHLC was known as Zomi Education Centre. ZEC operated from 2012 and was formally adopted by Manna House in 2015. Currently, the children of MHLC are primarily from the Zomi Community (a part of the Chin community in Myanmar). Their families mostly fled from Myanmar to escape persecution as well as poverty back in their homeland. The majority are registered with UNHCR Malaysia but as Malaysia is not a signatory to the UNHCR 1951 Refugee Convention, all refugees in the country are not accorded the proper basic rights. In the case of the children, their basic right to formal education is denied. They are only given access to education by concerned groups; mainly churches and NGOs. Thus, Sunway Student Volunteers has decided to make this as one of our long term project.

Once in a while, we will have nursery-rhyme sing along sessions with the nursery and kindergarten kids. It was so heartwarming to see the kids dancing and singing to the music, getting excited when their favorite nursery rhyme came up.

Not only did the kids enjoy the session, so did the volunteers. We look forward to teaching the kids every Friday and spending quality time with them.
